UK GLBT People Protected By Law – Christians Object

Posted by TransMan on October 15, 2007

The government across the Pond proposed a new law last week to criminalize hate speech directed at … gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender Britons. “ W e are now appalled by hatred and invective directed at people on the basis of their sexuality,” British Justice Secretary Jack Straw said. The Church of England
has denounced the law, suggesting it would permit homosexuals to sue the church if clergy condemned homosexuality as sinful.

“A homophobic hatred law would be used by those with an axe to grind against Christians to silence them,” Colin Hart, director of England’s Christian Institute, tells The Times. He adds it would not be the first time police interfered with free speech and religious liberty vis-à-vis sexual ethics. And police, it was announced, would be the final arbiters of who has “crossed the line” into this “atmosphere or climate” of hatred.

Isn’t i funny how so many Xians demand the right to bash, discriminate and hate GLBT people, but scream to Deep Hell as soon as someone call them on that shit…? Because that is what this is all about – the expression – and let’s be honest, a lot of Xians do bash, discriminate against and hate GLBT People.

Any anti-discrimination Law that proposes to protect GLBT, wouldn’t jail anyone for asserting that GLBT people are sinful – unless of course that assertion is made through abusive means – which is what such a law should be about.

The problem with Xians and their beliefs about GLBT People has never been the belief in itself, but the way this belief has been expressed. I don’t care if Xians hate me for being a transman, but I do care if their hatred come my way in the form of abuse and violence, verbal or physical. THAT is what this law is being made to protect from.

Not someone’s beliefs.

In the News: Dallas Police Department breaks transgender barrier

Posted by TransMan on October 13, 2007

Nineteen years ago, Mike Smith attended police academy alongside Joe Grabowski.

Today, as a sergeant for the Dallas Police Department, Smith supervises Officer Deborah Grabowski.

But Joe and Deborah aren’t husband and wife, brother and sister, or father and daughter.

Deborah Grabowski, 42, is the department’s first known transgender officer, having undergone sexual reassignment surgery in May.

But Smith said that for him and others who work with Grabowski out of a substation at Love Field, little has changed.

“To me, she’s the same person as she was 19 years ago,” Smith said. “We get along the same way. I treat her just like any other police officer. “

Grabowski said she’s thankful for that.

She’s witnessed horror stories from around the country involving transgender people being fired and the like.

Although Dallas has an ordinance, passed in 2002, prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity, Grabowski says she was fearful when she came out. But with the support of the city, she began living as a woman full time in 2006.

Grabowski, an 18-year veteran of the force, sat down with Dallas Voice recently to talk more about her experience. More…
